When it comes to full-size luxury sedans, one doesn’t think of South Korea as a country that is specialized in building such machines. With the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class around, why would anyone look forward to the launch of the 2017 Hyundai Equus luxobarge?
It’s simple, to be quite frank: pricing! For example, take the US-Spec 2015 Hyundai Equus’ $61,500 starting price and compare it to the class leader - the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class in S550 guise, which starts from $94,400 in the U.S. of A. This is the reason why South Korea still makes this type of vehicle.
Our carparazzi caught the third-gen Equus testing near the Arctic Circle only recently, but this time around, the KoreanCarBlog.com acquired spy pics of the all-new model’s cabin. As you can see, we are dealing with acres of lacquered wood veneer and soft-looking cream leather upholstery, with added satin-finish metal trim pieces for added feel good factor.
Though hardly visible, we can also see a BMW iDrive-inspired controller scroll wheel dominating the Equus’ center console. Looking at what the rear passengers are offered with, the Hyundai Equus doesn’t get a thoroughly usable middle seat because of an intrusive transmission tunnel.
Penned by automotive designer Peter Screyer, the 2017 Hyundai Equus will be unveiled next year and will be based on the Mk2 Genesis’ oily bits, with multi-link rear suspension tuned by the peeps from Lotus.
In terms of powertrain options, expect an all-wheel drive chassis propelled by an entry-level V6 motor or a 5-liter V8 tower-of-power, coupled to an 8-speed automatic as standard. A 10-speed automatic will be offered as well, if the South Korean company finishes the design of the new tranny by then.
