Believe it or not, the first-generation Civic predates the Golf by two years. Now at its tenth embodiment, the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe will be joined by a five-door hatchback body style.
When? The 2016 Paris Motor Show in October for the European specification. After Paris, the 2017 Honda Civic five-door will be unveiled for the North American market either in Los Angeles or Detroit. A wagon will arrive in time for the 2018 model year, but that is then and this is now, so let’s focus on this fellow.

Caught testing by our talented team of carparazzi in the Alps, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback will be an incredibly sexy car in the compact segment. Even in entry-level form like the pre-production prototype spied this time around, the Civic X in hatchback form looks the business from every angle you look at it. Don’t, however, assume that the Acura Jewel Eye-inspired LED headlights will come as standard. It will be an option worth ticking from the list, though.

Due to the lack of a center mounted exhaust system, it’s safe to assume that this mule is powered by either a 1.0-liter three-pot or the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-banger that prides itself on 174 HP (130 kW) when matched to the Civic Sedan. The 1.0 VTEC Turbo, on the other hand, churns out 127 HP (95 kW).

In Europe, the tenth generation of the Civic will also get a mildly updated 1.6-liter i-DTEC four-cylinder turbo diesel that’s bound to produce more than 120 horsepower. The Si model (Type-S in the Old Continent) is expected to borrow the 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo of the Civic Type R, albeit tuned to produce just over 200 ponies.

A full-on Type R variant is also on the cards with at least 306 HP. In terms of transmission choices, a good old six-speed stick shift and a CVT tuned to maximize fuel economy will have to do for this Civic.

Production of the tenth-generation Honda Civic Hatchback will be handled by the Honda plant in Swindon.
