We're going to look at this Honda Civic Cabrio rendering strictly for the fun of it. That's because there's a much higher chance of the CR-V getting a convertible version than the Civic.
Mercedes is having a lot of luck with convertibles, as their range will soon feature six of them. But Honda hasn't offered one of these in many years. Not even Audi, with its squeaky clean design reputation, can pull it off and will discontinue the A3 Cabriolet around 2018 or so.
And in any case, Honda is pretty much done making Civics for a while. Next will come more important projects, such as the CR-V. The soft-top Civic rendering is happening just because the new hatchback was revealed a couple of days ago. It's called the Civic X and will arrive in America this fall. Makes you wonder what will happen to the Type R.
The X kind of looks like a boy racer's car, designed to appeal to that young customer every automaker has been chasing. It's got a black grille, huge air intakes, dark wheels and angry-looking headlights.
Considering all that, a convertible seems like a horrible idea in our opinion. It would be far better to have a short-wheelbase targa-style 2-door with a fancy retracting mechanism. X-Tomi Design, if you're listening, consider photoshopping one of those instead. And while you're at it, the Civic Wagon needs to happen again.
With these kinds of projects, it's often the case that customers have a lot more imagination than the automakers. Take the Golf GTI Cabrio, for example. Even though Volkswagen stopped paying attention, somebody fitted the body kit from the 2015 GTI onto it to make a car that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.
So maybe somebody will make a custom Civic Targa, just like they did the Type R Wagon race car.
