In a way, the Golf Alltrack is the perfect example of what a crossover should be because it mixes elements from regular models and off-roaders. It's never going to be as popular as the Honda CR-V, but the German version of the Subaru Outback is off to a decent start thanks to a 5-star rating from the NHTSA. That will come in helpful when the 2017 model year is introduced this fall.
“Volkswagen is thrilled that the Golf Alltrack [has] earned the highest 5-star overall crash test rating from the government,” says Joerg Sommer, VP Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America. “The Alltrack was already highly anticipated, thanks to the combination of SportWagen design and all-wheel-drive performance, so this rating will add to the vehicle’s appeal and allow us to grow volume in the marketplace.”

There's no reason the IIHS would say good things about the Alltrack too. After all, it's based on the same Golf that got a Top Safety Pick+ score.

Besides six airbags and ESC, the Alltrack has Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. Among the options are good safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), and Lane Departure Warning.

Of course, all Volkswagens have the 5-star rating, but that hasn't helped them one bit. As a whole, sales dropped another 20% for them in June, and it seems fewer and fewer people want a Vdub after the Dieselgate scandal.

The notable exceptions are hot hatch fans, as GTI sales rose 11%, and those of the R were up a massive 50%. Last month was also the best June ever for the Tiguan. Unfortunately, the Jetta and Passat, which are usually the driving force behind the brand, aren't looking too hot. Beetle sales are down to just 600 coupes and 500 convertibles, making us wonder if the rumors about the axing aren't true.
