2017 Genesis G80 Deemed Safe by the NHTSA and IIHS Alike

After launching the G90, Genesis Motors extended its footprint in the luxury segment with the G80. Also known as the successor to the Hyundai Genesis sedan, this luxed-up sedan also happens to be equipped with a lot of standard safety technology.

Priced from $41,400, the 2017 Genesis G80 is available in 3.8, Premium, and Ultimate flavors. Be it the RWD or AWD, the entry-level grade boasts goodies that include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The lot, basically.

Also on the safety front, the G80 prides itself on high beam assist, smart cruise control, pre-active seat belts, nine airbags, auto hold, and a rearview camera. Curiously enough, a parking assistance system is available as an optional extra. Still, the NHTSA and IIHS hold the G80 in high regard.

In the case of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the G80 earned 5 stars overall thanks to perfect scores in the frontal barrier, side crash, and rollover tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reaffirms the NHTSA’s findings, awarding the G80 the coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating.

In the Institute’s low- and high-speed autobrake tests, performed at 12 and 25 mph, the 2017 Genesis G80 avoided a collision on both accounts. That’s fine and all, but the luxurious mid-size sedan isn’t without its faults. As the IIHS found out, the car’s child seat anchors are located too deep in the back seats, and the user might find it difficult to maneuver around the anchors.

“Occupant safety is a key development priority for all Genesis vehicles, and the G80 is no exception with its full suite of standardized advanced safety technology,” said Erwin Raphael, general manager of Genesis Motors in the U.S. “Safety is a hallmark of the Genesis brand, and we are committed to offering cutting-edge innovations and engineering developments to meet the needs of our customers and achieve these top safety honors,” he added.
