Any petrolhead knows how the Blue Oval put old man Enzo Ferrari to shame back in the 1960s. To make a long story short, Enzo wanted to sell his company to Ford, but backed off unexpectedly, thus leaving Ford empty-handed. That infuriated the American marque and payback would follow pretty soon.
The British division were instructed to make a Le Mans racecar that would beat the Prancing Horse to a pulp and that racer would arrive in 1964 in the form of the Ford GT40 Mk I. Fun fact: only the Mk IV was produced in the United States of America.
Thanks to the combined efforts of skilled drivers and a lot of top-notch engineering, Enzo Ferrari was shamed by the blue-collar manufacturer with four wins in a row at Le Mans from 1966 to 1969. After a number of dreary concept cars remotely inspired by the original, Ford made the GT happen again in the mid-2000s, producing around 4,038 examples of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8-powered bruiser.
Fast-forward to the present day and good golly, a new Ford GT is going to hit US showrooms in the first months of 2016. Announced by a concept at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, the 2017 Ford GT is a flamboyant automotive masterpiece, driven by a 600+ HP twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine.
Yesterday’s world debut couldn’t pass without the rendering crowd having a go at imagining the new halo model from Ford as a roofless Spyder and, of course, one adorned with classically correct Gulf Oil orange-and-pale blue livery and similarly old school knock-off spinners for the wheels.
Which of the two renderings below floats your boat the most?
