Good news, EV-loving folks! FoMoCo has finally understood that the only way to go forward with its electric vehicle push is to upgrade the range of existing models, Focus Electric included.
For the 2017 Ford Focus Electric, the manufacturer will up the ante from 23 kWh to 33.5 kWh. This information comes courtesy of a specifications sheet procured by our friends over at Inside EVs. The bigger capacity of the Focus’ battery will be joined by the addition of DC fast charging technology.
Based on the 46 percent jump in kilowatt-hours, the theoretical range will also hike up from the existing EPA-rated 76 miles (122 kilometers) to about 110 miles (177 kilometers). If this supposition turns to fruition, then the Focus Electric will be on par or marginally better than the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric and the 2016 Nissan Leaf.
Regarding CCS (Combined Charging System) DC fast charging, this technology will handle up to 50 kW, and it promises to recharge 80 percent of the battery in an estimated 30 minutes. Production for the 2017 Ford Focus Electric is slated for late 2016, as in December. The new model year also adds White Gold exterior paint, as well as 17-inch Sparkle Silver aluminum wheels instead of the current 17-inch aluminum wheels with no notable finish.
The question is, will the ~110-mile range become reality? I firmly believe that it will do, especially if we take into consideration that Ford executive Kevin Layden promised at least 100 miles of range back in April, on the sidelines of the SAE World Congress in Detroit. In related news, Ford has big plans for the future, primarily in the area of electrification.
Head honcho Mark Fields declared that the automaker intends “to be among the leaders or in a leadership position” when it comes down to electric vehicles. An EV currently known as the Ford Model E is currently being developed, boasting a targeted 200-mile (322 km) range on a full charge.
