The 2016 Chicago Auto Show is just around the corner, and Ford couldn't resist putting the Explorer under the spotlight. The SUV is built just around the corner, and the Illinois factory is now able to install a new Sport Appearance Package on the XLT model.
The new design is based on the 2016 facelift, but it will become available later this year as a 2017MY. There's something distinctively German about the way in which they came up with the idea.

You know how you can get an M Sport package to make your 328i look like an M3? Well, this is Ford's equivalent. The XLT Sport has the look of the Explorer Sport model but lacks its twin-turbo V6 engine.

Instead, you get the regular 3.5-liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. For the record, the genuine Sport model has 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, both arriving at lower rpm. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, but AWD costs extra.

Cosmetic changes include Magnetic Gray accents on the grille, mirrors, and tailgate. Other trim pieces are painted in Ebony Black, while the 20-inch alloy wheels have an excellent Magnetic Gray finish.

Inside, the designers have combined Dark Earth Gray leather and lighter Earth Gray Miko suede for the trim on the seats and doors. All the trim from the XLT trim level is there, including the 10-way power driver's seat, a SYNC 3 infotainment system and keyless start.

“Our Sport Appearance philosophy is rooted in the fact that we know exterior appearance is the No. 1 consideration in SUV purchase decisions,” said Omar Odeh, Explorer brand marketing manager. “The XLT Sport Appearance Package is a dramatic offering that gives customers another attractive option.”

The Ford Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Package will go on sale this summer. Pricing information will probably not be released at the Chicago Auto Show, but we expect something that fits between the Explorer XLT and the Limited.
