2017 DeLorean DMC-12 Pre-Orders Are Go

It’s hard not to associate the DeLorean DMC-12 with Back to the Future. But as fate would have it, the DMC-12 isn’t a time machine, but an iconic vehicle that came back to the present thanks to its huge fan base and the dedication of a Texas-based company.

Coming courtesy of the DeLorean Motor Company, the 2017 DeLorean DMC-12 is pretty much the same car as the original from 1981 to 1983, except that it isn’t. Unassociated to the original manufacturer, the Texas-based company that took up the DeLorean name sourced enough parts to manufacture just about 300 vehicles. And yes, the parts are original.

So to speak, the 2017 DeLorean DMC-12 isn’t a replica, nor an original, but some sort of all-new restomod. This stands true especially if we pop the hood. Instead of the asthmatic PRV V6 and the Renault-sourced 5-speed manual, the modern DMC-12 will make use of similarly modern powertrain solutions. As we reported a little while ago, DMC is still figuring out what engine to drop in there, with possible candidates including the 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo from Ford and the 3.6-liter LGX V6 from Chevrolet.

In a blog entry titled “OCTOBER 2017 LOW VOLUME UPDATE,” the manufacturer explains that chassis development for the DMC-12 is slightly behind the original schedule, “but prototype builds of the chassis are expected by early November.” What’s more, DMC forwarded a letter to the NHTSA that would deem the manufacturer eligible to sell the 2017 DeLorean DMC-12 as a low-volume vehicle. And while DMC is waiting for a positive reply, DeLorean announced that it now accepts pre-order applications.

Compared to other pre-orders, the interest application for the 2017 DeLorean DMC-12 doesn’t require you to pony up a deposit for a very simple reason: final specifications have yet to be announced. According to James Espey, the vice president of DeLorean Motor Company, production is slated to begin in Q2 2017. In the first calendar year, only 12 units are to be made.

In terms of pricing, just about $100,000 should do the trick. If you want one, the pre-order interest application is yours for the taking.
