With the current-generation Chrylser Town & Country with us since 2007, the luxurious American minivan produced in Canada is due to receive an all-new generation by 2016 according to the Chrysler brand's 2013 - 2018 product plan. And here it is, cool mums and dads, the sixth-gen Town & Country minivan in all its splendor minus the camouflage.
Known as the Lancia / Chrysler Voyager / Grand Voyager in various parts of the world, Chrysler's luxury minivan can seat your family and all the bits and bobs necessary for a weekend outside the city. Available with anything between a 2.8-liter CRD turbo diesel and a 4-liter gasoline V6, the Dodge Grand Caravan's posher brother is mated to an AutoStick six-speed automatic and varies in price from the $30,765 Touring to the $41,995 Limited.
So what's the deal with the upcoming sixth-gen model, spied by our carparazzi in development mule guise bearing Michigan license plates? It is a fact that the model will be launched in 2016, the same year when Chrysler will kill off the Dodge Grand Caravan. Unfortunately, any other detail currently known about the new Town & Country is purely speculative, but the photo gallery below gave us a few hints about what is there to be expected from this ritzy people carrier.
Riding on a newly developed chassis internally known under the "RU" moniker, the 2017 model year Chrysler Town & Country captured on film boasts with a totally revamped front fascia. See those 2015 Chrysler 200 headlights and the muscly front fender design? Another interesting detail represent the mirrors, which look similar to the ones fitted to the 2015 Dodge Challenger. A sliding door handle is also visible, while the rear incorporates LED tail lights with shiny chrome bezels. Last but not least, the swooping roofline a la the Chrysler 700C Concept integrates a shark fin radio and sat nav antenna.
From the cabin shot we identified a modern button-laden Dodge-sourced steering wheel with silver detailing, as well as the 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system available on 2015 model year Chrysler and Dodge models. Even the instrument cluster appears identical to the one fitted to the 2015 Dodge Charger, so it seems that Chrysler is pushing the envelope with the all-new Town & Country minivan. We also expect that it will get independent suspension at the rear and better designed Stow 'N Go seats.
It's possible that the tailgate will get a foot-activated open & close feature like what we've seen on upmarket German sedans and SUVs. Besides the traditional internal combustion lineup, Fiat Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne stated a while back that a 75 MPGe plug-in hybrid version of the new-gen Town & Country is also in the cards.
