Chevrolet’s 2017 Camaro ZL1 exceeds expectations when it comes to how fast people predicted it to perform.
During an event called Factory Fest, the general public had the occasion to witness a presentation of the 2017 Camaro ZL1, in which the project’s lead engineer, Al Oppenheiser, revealed a couple of interesting facts about the latest go-fast Camaro from General Motors.

The presentation focused on the all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, co-developed by General Motors with Ford. Mr. Oppenheiser stated that it not linked to the eight-speed unit, and that the product is so fast that people would “talk about it in 50 years.”

Sure, some things may have been overstated, like the fact that it could shift as fast as a Formula 1 car, but it has also been revealed that its production version is the only thing that keeps the 2017 Camaro ZL1 away from showrooms for now.

Contrary to the press release, the chief engineer of the Camaro project has stated that the new ZL1 is 230 pounds (104 kilograms) lighter than the previous model, and not 220 as it was previously announced. The 10-lb (4.5 kg) difference is not a massive hike, but any improvement will do, right?

While the performance specifications of the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 have already been announced for the 10-speed automatic transmission, we have news about the manual.

The chief engineer of the project has disclosed an interesting fact – the six-speed manual transmission Camaro ZL1 will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in first gear, thus improving its acceleration time from a standing start.

Just like the Ford Mustang, the Camaro Zl1 will have a line lock feature, as well as custom launch control. Both will be operated from the “Track mode,” while in gear, with the parking brake off. Users will manage the system with the steering wheel buttons (Select, and Cruise Cancel) to roll-out.

Camaro6 user TrueBlu has learned that the line-lock feature will allow for 15 seconds of operation of the front brakes, more than enough to heat up the rear tires.

Users will be able to change the launch rpm, as well as select the track surface from a predefined list. The V8 engine will provide 650 HP and 650 lb-ft of peak torque, as previously stated.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 will also have rev matching for the manual transmission, so customers do not jolt the car or lock the rear wheels with improper shifting, while both versions of the car will get a Performance Data Recorder.

Furthermore, the cars that are painted Black, Silver, Grey, White, or Red will get red seat belts. Only these exterior colors can be had with red seat belts, so remember that when ordering the 2017 Camaro ZL1, which starts at a base price of $62,135, without the expected gas guzzler tax.
