When the first photos of the 2017 Cadillac XT5 leaked on the Internet, most automotive journalists and petrolheads were like "The exterior looks great, but some angles scream Chevrolet Traverse." We beg to differ on that opinion, because the new kid on the block is so much better than the Traverse and SRX.
The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse mid-size crossover SUV rides on the antiquated GM Lambda platform. By comparison, the Cadillac SRX-replacing XT5 is underpinned by an all-new platform, internally known as the C1XX. Thanks to the modern skeleton, the XT5 is up to 278 lbs (126 kg) lighter than the SRX.

With the front-wheel-drive model weighing in at 3,999 lbs (1,814 kg), the XT5 is 100 lbs (45 kg) lighter than the Audi Q5 and a helluva lot lighter than the Mercedes-Benz GLE. If you can't do without all-wheel drive, expect your Cadillac XT5 to tip the scales at 4,277 lbs (1,940 kg). To be offered strictly as a 5-passenger crossover, the newest Caddy of them all will start production in Spring Hill, Tennessee, this spring.

The XT5 will also be built in China, where it will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-fed motor.

In the United States, there will be only one engine option for this family-oriented luxury crossover - a 3.6-liter V6 shared with the ATS, CTS, CT6, and 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. With 310 horsepower and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm), the XT5 is no slouch, especially if you vector in the fast-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift. The latter is the fancy way of describing the "first electronically controlled transmission shifter for a Cadillac," a gizmo that reduces noise and vibration over a traditional gear lever while giving enough space beneath the center console for a storage compartment. Anything else?

You'll be happy to find out that rear-seat legroom is increased 3.2 inches (8.1 cm) in the XT5 compared to the SRX. Another aspect that might be of interest to prospective buyers is the Rear Camera Mirror system, which enhances the driver's rear vision by 300 percent. It uses a video display applied over the inside rearview mirror and a camera that records images behind the car. The software then removes obstacles such as the roof, rear pillars, and rear seat passengers for superior visibility.

Pricing? It's too soon for that, but we have this sneaking suspicion the MSRP will start at about $38,000, give or take a few hundred bucks. On an ending note, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a spirited design for a crossover in this segment, expressing a distinctive sense of style through its chiseled exterior lines.
