The prototype of the X1’s sportier brother has been spotted in northern Sweden. We have been provided with an extended photo gallery of the model thanks to the hard work of our spy photographers. Usually, we only use one gallery of spyshots for each prototype, but this time we will make an exception because we have the opportunity of showing you a larger exhibit and the car was spotted in the same area on two different occasions.

The BMW X2 is naturally based on the new X1’s UKL platform, but features a body with a sportier design. The front end is different from the one found on the X1, while the roof is much lower. The result is a car that looks wider and more aggressive, but without the extremely sloped roof found on the X4 and X6.

The UKL platform has been used for a variety of cars from the BMW Group, and its entry-level versions present a front-wheel-drive configuration. However, this platform supports a four-wheel-drive system, and can be fitted with a plug-in hybrid configuration as well. BMW has already released such models based on this platform, which the German group also uses for its current MINI range.

A quick look through this article’s photo gallery reveals BMW has given its X2 a pretty aggressive design. The front grille seems to have a different angle, while the headlights appear to have an angrier-looking shape.

The tail lights of the prototype shown aren’t using the graphics designed for the production version, but we notice that the car has a rather small rear window, and this particular model features dual exhausts. Most likely, the engineers are testing a more powerful version of the planned X2.

BMW is expected to launch the X2 sometime this year, as a 2017 model. Along with the platform and interior, the car will borrow its entire engine range from the X1.
