2017 BMW G31 5 Series Touring Spied Showing Huge Body Roll on the Nurburgring

It’s no longer news that BMW is already working on the new 5 Series, and the first prototypes have already been spotted out testing, even in production guise. As far as we could tell, the new 5er will follow closely in the footsteps of the 7 Series and even bring new tech altogether.

Out spy photographers caught up with a Touring model on the Nurburgring, and it seems like it was the production version. Even though it’s still under heavy camouflage, we can tell that’s the case because of the headlights, which are not only new but they also seem to take after the ones used on the 2016 7 Series.

Combining that piece of information with a set of previous spyshots that offered some insight into the cabin, we can definitely tell that the new model will be ‘importing’ more than a few hints from the design of the G11 7 Series when it comes out.

The front end will be extremely similar and the same could be said by the rear end. Even the side profile will bear some similarities while inside the cabin you should expect a new steering wheel and the updated iDrive system. After all, we saw the fixed screen mounted right above the center air vents in the previous shots and that’s a clear sign that we will face a new infotainment system compared to the current model.

The technical side of things will be close too. Both cars are going to be built atop the CLAR platform (which stands for Cluster Architecture) and is the codename used for the underpinnings that will be forming the basis of every rear-wheel drive car built by the Germans in the future.

This will include everything from the 3 Series up for sure while the debate about the future of the 1 Series and 2 Series (just the Coupe and Convertible) versions is still up for debate.

That means that the new G30 Sedan and G31 Touring 5 Series cars will be using the B family of engines, ranging from 2-liter petrol and diesel mills to 3-liter and even 4.4-liter V8 units, the latter possibly being replaced by a 4-liter by 2017 when it enters production.

What we’re most disappointed in after looking at these photos though is the apparent amount of body roll that is noticeable even in stills. At times, the car seems to be extremely wobbly but we need to keep in mind that this was all shot during Nurburgring tests and that means everything was pushed to the limit.

Furthermore, that’s the main reason why such tests are taking place, to make sure that the end product doesn’t feature such flaws. Since the new 5er is expected to drop at least 100 kg (221 lbs) off its waist, we’re probably going to drive cars with considerably better dynamics than their predecessors.

UPDATE: new photos came in today, showing the interior of the car for the second time. As we told you, the steering wheel is coming straight out of the new 7 Series and so is the new infotainment system that seems to be using the new iDrive interface that is touch-senzitive.
