BMW is currently in the midst of a reinvention process, with the next-gen 5 Series being an important part of this plan. We’ve spied the 2017 G31 5er Touring before, but now we want to peer through that camo and focus on the new front end details.
Underneath the camouflage, we have a production-body prototype. Since we’re approaching that point in 2016 when the car is revealed, it was about time to see the test vehicle approach their final form.

Wishing to observe the front end, we are currently limited by the serious camouflage, but things only become even more covered at the rear. By the way, the overall shape of the vehicle and those round mock-up rear lights somehow remind us of the Ferrari FF.

Nevertheless, the 5 Series clientele doesn’t take buying decisions based on looks. The next generation of this BMW will be all about technology, inside and out.

The tech

It will all start with the new CLAR architecture, which will underpin all future rear-wheel drive BMWs from the 3-Series upwards. And the 5 Series will learn more than one trick from the recently-launched 2016 7 Series. For one thing, it will bring a noticeable weight cut. The rumor mill sees the car dropping over 200 lbs (100 kg).

Under the hood, motivation will come from a new engine family, which will go from two to three liters in displacement. BMW has already stepped up its hybrid game with the 3 Series LCI and they’re only planning to take things ever further down the hybridization road. For example, the prototype spied here is a hybrid.

The features

Inside the cabin, we’ll be treated with delicacies such as Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto. Nevertheless, certain unofficial sources even talk about the BMW receiving an augmented reality driving feature. This was rumored to debut on the G11 7 Series, but the flagship sedan came to the world without it.

You should also expect advanced autonomous driving features from the next BMW 5 Series.

With Mercedes also being close to releasing a new generation for the E-Class, the 5 Series will have quite a war to take part it in.
