The German estate model was spotted by a YouTube user that calls himself Automotive Mike. The name of the channel is self-explanatory, so there is no need to detail further what Michael’s passion is, as he is one of us, a petrolhead.

BMW’s next-generation 5 Series will be based on the company’s 35up platform, which will help it lose up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds) in weight. Thanks to the diet, the next 5 Series should be sharper in the bends and faster in the straights.

Furthermore, fuel efficiency and acceleration figures will be improved, as the updated engine lineup will have to move less weight around, so that will be another bonus for the clients of this car.

While the 5 Series sedan will be called G30, the upcoming 5 Series Touring will be named G31, but these are just internal designations that only matter to BMW engineers. Evidently, fans of the blue-and-white roundel are aware of them, as are automotive journalists, for obvious reasons.

The spy videos of the BMW 5 Series Touring G31 come just a few days after our spy photographers spotted an Alpina B5 Touring lapping the ‘Ring. The B5 Touring is Alpina’s version of the 5 Series in the wagon body style, and it is evident that both BMW and its specialized tuner are working hard to make the next generation of this model be as fast as it can be.

Judging by the way the prototype is driven on the famed “Green Hell,” you can observe that the engineers have full faith in the technical platform of the 5-er, as well as its dynamic abilities.

Considering that the model pictured in the video below is not an M model, it seems to handle the most demanding track in the world with grace and style, a feat that is not matched by most wagons on the market today.

In over fourteen years, he got behind the wheel of several hundred vehicles and in the offices of the most important car publications in his homeland.
