Even though the Audi Exclusive parts catalog has a wide variety of custom goodies made from carbon fiber, they haven't gone as crazy as BMW did with the Performance offering. Thus, the interior of the R8 super sportscar can feel a little drab when compared to its Italian cousin.
A few years ago, it was discovered that there was an Audi aluminum piece in the middle of all that gorgeous Italian leather. However, the R8 is an Audi, and the Aventador is a Lamborghini.
But since Audi has narrowed the price gap between its car and the Huracan, there's no reason not to have an extra-special R8. There's a company in Germany called Neidfaktor that can take the thing you grip to the next level with two of the popular materials used in the custom car world.
About half of the steering wheel from the 2017 R8 is now made of carbon fiber. This includes the upper and lower grips, the center and even the pieces that hold the buttons. We're not big fans of this transformation, but it is unique. The factory configuration is somehow classier, more timeless, thanks to large brushed aluminum surfaces.
As for the grips on the sides, those have been covered in Alcantara leather instead of the regular perforated Nappa. Because the steering wheel on the R8 is not that often talked about, we thought you guys might want to know what those four new buttons do. The ones on the left are for the Audi drive select and performance mode (includes a small rotary). On the right, we have a big red starter button and a switch that works with the active exhaust system.
There are no such features on the old R8, which was a simpler machine that was even available with a manual. However, Neidfaktor has also made a carbon+Alcantara conversion so you won't feel left out.
