2017 Audi Q5 Shows New Design Details in Latest Spyshots

Slowly but surely, the Audi Q5 test prototype is revealing what we've known all along: that all Audis still look the same. Despite what their new head of design promised, the Q5 looks a lot like the Q7 and the A4.

These are the latest spy photos, and they show a few more details than the previous ones. For example, the headlights and taillights are less disguised. The side window line is fully visible, and the mesh of the grille is more easily seen. Black roof rails that will be painted silver when in production peak out from the top of the car.

We are amazed by the fact that the taillight design seems nearly identical to the current Q5. Broad curves are used to define these red pieces of Plexiglas, mirroring the softness of the extra-large boot opening. Audi's design is clearly different from that of the XC60, GLC, and X3, but not better.

The Q5 will switch from being made in Europe to a new facility in San José Chiapa in Mexico. Why? Wages are notably lower in Mexico than they are in Germany, plus they can more easily respond to demand from the US market. A Q6 model will also be introduced a few years from now, the rumors suggest.

We've mentioned the fact that the all-new Q5 will be based on the MLB Evo platform many times. That means engines will be shared with the A4 sedan and wagon, starting from basic 2-liter units and going up to the SQ5's V6, possibly even higher.

At least one PHEV will be available, which we predict to use a 2.0 TFSI making 190 PS with two electric motors. However, the Q5 TDI ultra will prove a simple and cheaper way to save money on fuel. Audi engineers have even developed a special quattro AWD that saves 5% of the fuel by de-coupling the rear axle.
