In the world of compact luxury crossover SUVs, the Audi Q5 is a senior citizen for a handful of reason, including its venerable age and dated looks. Despite that, Audi had assembled a million of these babies at its Ingolstadt plant from 2008 to the present day.
The one-millionth member of the Audi Q5 is a go-faster SQ5 with Sepang Blue paint and a powerful V6 under its hood. But the thing is, there are more than one million Q5s out there. Sold in more than 100 countries and produced in China and India as well, total deliveries for the Q5 sum up 1.6 million units.

“The Audi Q5 is a genuine guarantee of success for us. For that reason, I am very proud that we have created a worldwide crowd puller with this SUV model from the main plant in Ingolstadt. One million Audi Q5 cars – that is due to the outstanding performance of our production team. We achieved it with great effort and commitment,” said Albert Mayer, Audi plant director.

Now, though, the time has come for an announcement regarding the long-due successor of the first-generation Audi Q5. Boys and girls, ladies and gents, “Audi Ingolstadt is the lead plant and mentor for the new Audi plant in Mexico. The Audi Q5 will drive off the production line in San Jose Chiapa for the world market as of late September.” That’s absolutely right, ladies and gents, this change of heart will see Ingolstadt focus on other models.

Word on the street is wages are lower in Mexico than in Audi’s domestic market. Besides, producing the second-gen Audi Q5 there makes it easier for Audi to greet demand in the United States of America and Canada. This isn’t just cost-cutting. It is a win-win situation for Audi AG, an automaker who has to put up with the mess Volkswagen made with the Dieselgate scandal.

Here’s a sneak peek of the 2017 Audi Q5 in pre-production form. Oh, and by the way, the first public outing of the second-generation Audi Q5 is slated for September 29, 2016, at the Paris Motor Show.
