Shortly after Audi revealed the all-new A5 as a 2-door coupe, people with more editing skills than we will ever have made all the future production models. We saw the RS5, the convertible and the 5-door. Those last two will be ready this year while the hot model will take another year.
After the serious work had been finished, they all started making Shooting Brakes. X-Tomi from Europe made a green one with simpler lines. Meanwhile, Theophilus Chin from Asia had the idea of adding the silver rear pillar from the Audi Q2 crossover. He calls it a failure and we agree with him that it was a bad idea. But, thanks to the quad exhaust, big wheels and large intakes of the S5, which he started with, the outcome is appealing in its own way.
Let me tell you my little secret. I've seen every shooting brake rendering ever made. There must have been hundreds of them, and only two or three ever got made. Honest, you have a better chance of seeing a W12 Golf GTI than one of these things.
There's no point in having a 3-door body for a big wagon because you can't drag a big object into a flat loading area if there aren't any rear doors. Likewise, nobody wants to have a combination between a van and sportscar.
The shooting brake is just something all us car people like looking at for a short while before we move on to the latest drag races or anti-Top Gear rants. That being said, it would be cool if Audi could make a 5-door coupe-wagon, like the CLS Shooting Brake. It wouldn't be very popular, of course, but the A4 Avant is very popular, and this would be a great alternative to that.
Should we hope for that? Not when the quattro people haven't even made a rival for the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe.
