Slated to debut this fall at the Los Angeles or Paris Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is slated to start production at the Cassino plant in the fourth quarter of 2016. Hence, engineers are working overtime to finish the mid-size crossover just on time.

Although this is not the first time the carparazzi snapped the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio in the wild, this is the first time they got close to the damn thing. Let us begin with the interior design. See the central tunnel? Yes, it’s the same central tunnel like the one in the Giulia. The gear lever for the 8-speed automatic transmission and the rotary dials are also familiar, as are the steering wheel and the paddle shifters.

The similarities continue with the interior door handles, the outline of the central air vents, the driver-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, and the contour of the instrument cluster. If I were to be blindfold then put inside a Stelvio, I’d have a hard time telling it apart from a Giulia. This likeness shouldn’t surprise you because the Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover are sharing the same backbone.

Outside, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is thoroughly camouflaged, albeit a handful of details are plain to notice. The honeycomb mesh grille, for example, is similar to that of the Giulia. However, the graphics of the headlights and taillights are a little bit different. Looked at from the profile and rear, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio appears as if it’s been inspired by the Maserati Levante, a.k.a. the Maserati of SUVs.

Under the skin, the one that’s internally referred to as the Tipo 949 D-SUV will get a selection of four- and six-cylinder mills, both gasoline and diesel units. The cream of the crop will be a Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V6 engine that displaces 2.9 liters and churns out 503 horsepower (510 PS). This is the second of eight all-new models Alfa Romeo will debut by 2020. The next models in line are the Alfa Romeo Tipo 961 executive sedan, Tipo 962 C-SUV, Tipo 963 Spider, Tipo 963 Coupe, and replacements for the Giulietta and MiTo.
