For an excruciatingly long time now, the Fiat Chrysler-owned Alfa Romeo brand had been promising us a luxurious SUV in the form of the Stelvio. Internally referred to as the Tipo 949, the family-friendly Alfa Romeo Stelvio will debut soon. Very soon.
The month if November and the place of unveiling is the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. At least that’s what Auto Express is sure of, citing insider information. The second all-new model to ride on the Giorgio platform will be, for what it’s worth, a jacked-up version of the sexy-looking Giulia (Tipo 952).
Rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations can be expected from the compact luxury crossover SUV, as well as pretty much the same engines found under the hood of the four-door sedan. Hence, the lineup will start with 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo units, continue with 2.2-liter and 2.9-liter turbo diesels, and top with a Ferrari-grade 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 tower-of-Italian-power.
Regarding output, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio range will kick off with a 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel engine that’s good for 150 PS (110 kW), rear-wheel-drive, and God knows what transmission. Will there be a stick shift, will the Stelvio be offered only with the auto, it’s anybody’s guess at the present moment.
At the other end of the spectrum, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio will boast 510 PS (375 kW) from a force-fed V6, on par with what the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4Matic’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 will offer. It remains to be seen if production will start by year’s end or in early 2016. For the U.S., the all-new model will probably roll into dealer lots for MY 2018.
Speaking of all-new stuff, six more newities will follow after the Stelvio. By mid-2020, the Italian manufacturer will launch a larger sport utility vehicle (it's currently called Tipo 962 C-SUV), a mid-size four-door sedan (Tipo 941), a fixed-head sports car and its spider iteration (Tipo 941), and replacements for the MiTo supermini and Giulietta compact hatchback.
