Wards Auto has been making a Top 10 best engines list for 22 years now. This year is the first time when three electric powertrains made their way into this competition, while all of the cars that got on the list had to cost less than $61,000.
The final 10 candidates for the 2016 Best Engine award were chosen after Wards Auto’s editors studied and drove 31 vehicles during October and November. The editors tested the cars by using them for everyday activities such as going to and from home, work, school or the grocery store.
Every car has been assessed based on horsepower, torque, comparative specs, fuel economy or the application of new technology.
According to Drew Winter, content director at Wards Auto, the list contains a wide variety of cars, including three electrified drivetrains such as the Toyota Prius hybrid, the Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid, and the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric.
The top also includes two naturally aspirated V6s, a muscle car V8, a turbocharged/supercharged 4-cyl, a turbocharged inline 6, and two winning engines from last year.
BMW remains the most-honored carmaker, having won no less than 32 trophies since this competition began in 1995. This year, the German carmaker has been awarded for the B58 3.0 turbocharged engine that powers the 340i sedan.
Second place for most awards won throughout the years goes to General Motors, who received 30 trophies in 22 years. GM’s winning engine for 2016 is the turbocharged V6 from the Cadillac ATS and all-new Camaro. According to Wards Auto, this one earned its place in the Top for proving that a V6 engine is not just a replacement for those who can’t afford a V8 anymore.
Another American muscle that made it in this top is the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350, for its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V8, which pushes 526 horsepower to the rear wheels.
The two power units that also won the Best Engine award last year and returned for 2016 are the 3.0-liter turbodiesel in the Dodge RAM 1500 and the turbocharged 2.0-liter Boxer from the Subaru WRX.
Apparently, Volkswagen Group has been banned from participating this year because of the Dieselgate scandal.
The winning automakers will collect their Best Engine trophies during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 13, 2016.
