2016 Volvo XC90 Recalled Over Restraints System Issue

More comfortable, more beautiful and more techno-crazy than its honorable predecessor, the 2016 Volvo XC90 is representing the Swedish manufacturer’s ambitions in the coming years. Initial sales success surpassed the brand’s exception, but a recall wasn’t in Volvo’s agenda until now.

Volvo Cars issued a safety recall that is covering an estimated 200 units of the 2016 Volvo XC90 sold around the world. Volvo tells that there’s “a potential issue with an electronic wire harness which controls parts of the restraints system in the car.” Thankfully, no incidents have been reported related to this defect.

According to the Swedish company, the issue affecting certain 2016 Volvo XC90 customer cars is related to a wire fitted in the front seats. An incorrect assembly has resulted in a condition which may result in the insulation being damaged over time. What's next then?

If the wire insulation should occur, the 2016 Volvo XC90 will display a warning message in the instrument cluster, informing the driver to take the mid-size luxury crossover SUV to a dealer for repairs. Volvo adds: “Damages to the wire harness may result in the front seat side airbags not functioning as intended.” There’s no risk of the vehicle’s side airbags to deploy accidentally due to this defect.

The recalled population of customer cars is located in the US and EU, with most XC90 units sold in Sweden. XC90 customers affected will be contacted by letter. They will be instructed to contact the nearest dealership, to check and correct the wire harness issue if necessary.

Vehicles that haven’t yet reached customers will be checked and if necessary corrected prior to delivery. The supplier of the harness introduced additional quality control measures to ensure correct installation.
