Forget the box-shaped station wagons Volvo used to sell when you were a kid. The 2016 Volvo V90 is a different animal, one that’s more concerned with style and safety than cargo capacity. Based on the S90 mid-size sedan, the long-awaited V90 wagon has been officially revealed today at the manufacturer’s Torslandaverken plant in Torslanda, Sweden.
The Volvo wagon heritage started in 1953 with the Volvo Duett, but things have changed dramatically compared to how they were 63 years ago. Despite the automotive advances that happened during these six decades, the pedigree of the Duett can be found in the newest longroof from the Swedish manufacturer. “In many people’s minds we are known as the definitive estate brand. While the Volvo brand today stands for more than estates, we are proud to carry forward this rich heritage with the V90.” declared Håkan Samuelsson, the president of Volvo Cars.
Underpinned by the modular Scalable Product Architecture used by the XC90 and S90, the V90 is available in five flavors: T5, T6 AWD, T8 Twin Engine AWD, D4, and D5 AWD. In plain English, all engines have a displacement of 2 liters. In the case of the T8 Twin Engine, the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0 engine is teamed up with an electric motor that drives the rear wheels. In pure electric mode, the Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine can travel up to 45 km (28 miles), according to the NEDC for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The 9.6 kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged as fast as 2.5 hours or 6 hours on a standard household outlet. Total output for the T8 Twin Engine model is 407 PS (or 400 horsepower for the U.S. specification) and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft). How about that? The fastest wagon ever made by Volvo is also the cleanest. For those who are only concerned with the fuel economy, the D4 turbo diesel is the engine for you.
It’s redundant to talk about the exterior styling and cabin design of the 2016 Volvo V90 because there’s not a lot to give between it and its sedan brother. Instead, potential owners in the market for a new family car might be interested in the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive tech on board this thing. Described as the most advanced standard safety package on the market, Volvo Pilot Assist prides itself on animal detection and run-off road mitigation. The U.S. and Canada will get this family hauler as the 2018 Volvo V90.
All the information available on the all-new wagon from Sweden can be found in the release after the video and the technical specifications are attached in a PDF just under that.
