When we drove the V40 Cross Country a few years ago, we were amazed by how much premium feel they hammered into the Ford Focus platform. The carmaker also introduced much more efficient Drive-E engines recently, but the market is so competitive that they're looking to introduce a successor already.
Volvo has officially confirmed the new V40 is coming in 2016, when it will be built at the Ghent factory in Belgium. It and some other small cars (we expect an XC40 crossover) will be underpinned by the newly developed C-segment Modular Architecture (CMA).
But considering that the V40 was only launched in 2013, it's far more likely that the current model will be adapted to fit new technology models. Volkswagen pulled the same tricks by stuffing the old Beetle, Scirocco and Polo with MQB features.
That's why we think these renderings for the 2016 Volvo V40, created by RM Design, are accurate. They show a C-segment machine that is both familiar and different-looking at the same time. Yes, some of the bodywork is old, but we rather like the timeless quality of a Volvo.
Changes are most comprehensive at the front, where the designer decided to add the latest Thor Hammer headlight design. This made its debut on the XC90 full-size luxury SUV and is likely to appear on every model in the range.
However, a C-segment crossover SUV is expected to play the biggest role, targeting the fastest growing market in the world right now.

What other compacts is Volvo planning?
Volvo's Senior Vice President of Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management said they are looking to revive the famous C30 entry-level model. The same Ghent plant in Belgium could also be making a new S40 compact sedan, seeing that Mercedes and Audi have witnessed booming sales with their A3 and CLA models in America. However, a C-segment crossover SUV is expected to play the biggest role, targeting the fastest growing market in the world right now.
