Ladies and gentlemen, you've been waiting for this a long time now, so here goes – say hello to the all-new 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan. To arrive as the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan in the United States, the crossover SUV from Wolfsburg is harder, better, faster, stronger, and a lot more hi-tech than before.
After 2.64 million units of the first-gen Tiguan were sold all around the world, Vee-Dub unveiled the MQB platform-based 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan at the Frankfurt Motor Show and would you just look at it! It's a beautiful beast thanks to sharp lines, modern-looking headlights and taillights, as well as an Audi-inspired side profile. Overall, it's tenfold more attractive than the first generation.

To be offered in normal and long wheelbase guise, the compact-sized 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is more than 110 pounds (50 kg) lighter than the previous model. With a trunk capacity of 18.4 cubic feet (521 liters), it can also swallow up more luggage than before. With the rear seats folded flat into the floor, cargo capacity goes up to 58.5 cubic feet (1,656 l), a lot by mid-sized SUV standards.

Engine options include four TSI motors and four TDI oil burners that offer outputs from 115 horsepower (85 kW) to 240 horsepower (176 kW). The latter figure comes courtesy of a 2.0 BiTDI twin-turbo diesel engine. With the 4MOTION Active Control system and the right towing equipment, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan can tow up to 5,512 lbs (2,500 kilograms). On the safety front, customers get amenities like City Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Monitoring, automatic accident notification, and so forth.

Speaking of safety, the hood pops as soon as a person comes into contact with it in a crash thanks to a pyrotechnically activated system similar to an airbag. The system is designed to soften the blow of the crash, reducing the gap between the hard engine and soft bonnet to reduce possible injuries. All nice and tidy here, but doesn't the Tiguan look as it has grown a lil' bit here and there?

Why, yes, it has grown by 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) in length and 3 inches (7.6 cm) in wheelbase. Thanks to a fifth-gen Haldex coupling, the 4MOTION-equipped Tiguan stands 11 mm higher to the ground compared to its predecessor. With the optional off-road front fascia package, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan can handle approach angles of 25.6 degrees. What about what's on the inside? Anything new?

Of course. Loosely inspired by the Volkswagen Passat B8's cabin design, the interior of the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a monochrome 5-inch touchscreen on the entry-level Trendline trim level. Go for the Comfortline and you'll receive a similarly sized color infotainment system. The 8-inch touchscreen is reserved for features such as MirrorLink, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

In the adjacent photo gallery, the white-painted Tiguan is the R-Line specification while the red-painted bugger is the off-road package-equipped model. On an ending note, Volkswagen tells that the long wheelbase 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan will be a 7-seater that'll arrive in select markets by autumn 2016.
