2016 Volkswagen Tiguan Available with 190 HP 2.0 TDI from €37,475

Only a few days after organizing a media event in Berlin, Volkswagen is making available a new engine on the 2016 Tiguan. It's the 190 horsepower version of the 2.0 TDI, and we think it's going to be popular.

We've done everything to get our hands on the latest Tiguan information. Every other person walking into a VW dealership these days wants to buy either this SUV or the Passat. But the powertrain lineup is far from complete, and some of the details are sketchy.

For example, we found an internal document that states the entry-level TDI engine is not the 1.6. Instead, customers are getting a de-tuned 2.0 TDI, producing 110 PS, much like the one on the current Beetle models.

We'll have more information on that later. For now, let's focus on the powerful new 2.0 TDI, which delivers 190 PS and 400 Nm of torque from 1,900rpm. It complies with the Euro 6W regulations, meaning it produces even fewer toxic gasses than it's supposed to.

As usual, VW technology is expensive to buy. In the average Comfortline trim level, the 190 PS engine is available at €37,475 as it comes as standard with a 7-speed DSG automatic and 4Motion all-wheel drive. A 150 PS diesel of similar build is over €1,500 less expensive, while the gasoline version is about €3,000 less.

If you are looking for a cheap compact SUV, don't talk to Volkswagen about it. To make the photo gallery below, we optioned the Tiguan Highline with the R-Line exterior pack and some white paint. So the model you or I really want would set you back at least €42,000.

If you are looking for the fastest Tiguan, Volkswagen says this isn't it. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint is dealt with in 7.9 seconds, but the 2.0 TSI engine with 180 PS takes just 7.7 seconds.

This all has to do with weight. Even though VW tried to make the SUV lighter, adding AWD and an automatic gearbox piles on the kilos: 1,723 kg (3,789 lbs). The number seemed high, making me curious how it compares to the model before. Surprise, surprise, a 2015 Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4Motion with DSG tipped the scales at 1,727 kg (3,807 lbs).
