2016 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Refreshed Using Discrete Body Kit and New Colors

The aging Golf Cabriolet, based on the Mk6 chassis, has soldiered on into the 2016 model year. The rag-top model is making its online debut and will soon be presented at the 2015 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

With cars like the all-new Tiguan and the S-Class Cabriolet making their all-mighty debuts in the German car capital, nobody is going to give a damn about the Golf "picnic basket". However, we still love its originality, especially now that it's been enhanced.

Reading past the German press statement, which is misleading, we noticed that the front bumper has been replaced. It's not major when you compare it to the Scirocco's facelift, but the tweaks also include added side skirts and two inserts at the back.

Besides six new exterior colors, there is an additional soft-top tone and six new wheel designs. In the interior, there is a new generation of steering wheels and new trim elements as well as new designs for the cloth and leather seats. These changes mirror the Scirocco or Sharan, bridging the gap between the Mk6 and Mk7 Golf.

For the 2016 model year, all engines have been updated or replaced to meet the Euro 6 emissions standard. There are four petrol (TSI) and two diesel engines (TDI) in total, all fitted with turbochargers and direct fuel injection.

The base unit is a familiar 1.2 TSI with 105 PS and 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque. It's always been available on this car, but emissions have gone down by 22 grams to 117 while fuel consumption has been reduced from an average of 5.9 to 5.1 l/100km.

Next up, we have two versions of the 1.4 TSI, pushing 125 PS and 150 PS. Powerful yet much cheaper than the diesels, we think these are the engines to buy with the Golf Cabriolet. On the diesel front, Volkswagen has introduced the same 2-liter TDI engines as on the Beetle (same platform). We're talking about a basic 110 horsepower unit, followed by one that pushes 150 PS and 340 Nm (250 lb-ft) of torque.

Lastly, there's the GTI model that continues unchanged by these 2016 cosmetic shenanigans. It packs a 220 hp 2-liter turbo and will get you to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
