2016 Volkswagen Caddy with Natural Gas and DSG Debuts in Geneva

The new Caddy that Volkswagen revealed last year continues to offer more versions of itself. After turning into an Alltrack model, it's now become available with the first turbocharged natural gas engine and DSG gearbox in the segment.

That's one of the weirdest combinations we've ever heard about, as the natural gas engine makes you the biggest cheapskate on the road and yet the DSG gearbox is one of the most expensive options you can get. We think the idea behind this car is to offer it as a taxi since several European companies have automatic cars for the comfort of their customers.

Just like all the other TGI models provided by the VW Group (Leon, Golf, Octavia) the Caddy features a 1.4-liter turbo engine with direct injection. The output goes down by a lot, as you only have 110 PS and 200 Nm to play with. The top speed of 172 km/h (with DSG) is decent but not that impressive. Thanks to BlueMotion technology, however, it's very efficient. The Caddy and Caddy Maxi can consume as little as 4.1 kilograms of gas per 100 kilometers, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 112 grams (123 in the Maxi).

Changes to the standard model include a gas filler cap next to the regular one, an extra clock on the dash and alteration for the menus of the small screen in between the gauges that now tells the range on both types of fuel.

These commercial vehicles have also been fitted with high-pressure tanks mounted under the trunk floor. The four tanks mounted on the regular caddy hold 26 kilograms of gas at 200 bars. As for the larger Caddy Maxi TGI, it gets five tanks and 37 kg of fuel. In both cases, 13-liter petrol tanks are also installed to boost the range and for cold starts. VW assures us that the risks of an explosion are absolutely zero, which is more than we can say about an aftermarket LPG conversion.

The new Caddy TGI with DSG will arrive at dealerships at the beginning of June 2016 starting at €21,010.00 net (€25,001.90 gross) as a panel van. The passenger version with the DSG is €21,385.00 net (€25,448.15 gross).

There are also several Caddy Alltrack models with the 1.4 TGI engine, ranging from a manual van at €21,010.00 net (€25,001.90 gross) to the €26,385.0 net (€31,398.15 gross) passenger car version.
