2016 Subaru XV Crosstrek Special Edition Gets Pure Red Exterior Color

The Subaru XV Crosstrek could be all-new for the 2017 model year. So to keep customers interested in the current car, Subaru has just launched the 2016 Crosstrek Special Edition ahead of its big debut in Chicago.

The little crossover will make its appearance in the Windy City, but we don't think the press is going to be blown away by it, which is a real shame.

Despite sharing its dorky hatchback appearance with the Mercedes GLA-Class, the jacked-up Subaru doesn't come with a monster turbocharged engine. Instead, it soldiers on with the frugal 2.0i boxer engine that makes just 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The engine has DOHC with four valves per cylinder and VVT. It gets slightly worse mileage than the Impreza hatchback because of the 3-inch suspension lift. All-wheel drive is standard, and so is the CVT gearbox.

So what's so special about the 2017 Special Edition. Let's start with the color Pure Red, which covers all the body and the mirrors that have integrated turn signals. Pure Red is a typical color for the BRZ and WRX for 2016, so Subaru hopes it will make the XV sportier.

In the trademark Japanese way of building a car, you first build it and then add stuff every year. For 2016, the Crosstrek gets a power moonroof, a keyless entry system, a push-button ignition, and an infotainment system with a 6.2-inch display. Again, these are Impreza and BRZ features.

In case you suck at parking, the Crosstrek is great because it comes with a standard reversing camera. That would be very exciting if we knew how much it costs, but we don't.

Also standard on the Special Edition is the All-Weather Package that includes heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icer. Lastly, Subaru's latest safety systems have been added. The array includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

While we can't yet tell you what this thing costs, expect somewhere in the region of $26,000. Only 1,500 units are scheduled to arrive in US showrooms this spring.
