After the Subaru BRZ tS STI launched in Japan alongside the 2015 Subaru WRX S4 and WRX STI, the Japanese manufacturer has something in store for its US fans. Cue the 2016 model year BRZ and WRX STI with the gentle touch of Series.HyperBlue treatment.
Before detailing the Series.HyperBlue, we must highlight the 2016 model year improvements for both models. In the case of the BRZ, Subaru boasts the same 200 horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder boxer. Standard equipment-wise, the 2016 BRZ gets a 6.2-inch Starlink touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone connectivity, an USB port, and Starlink apps such as Pandora radio.
When it comes to the 2016 Subaru WRX STI, the belly of the beast is still the 305 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine we all know and love, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Compared to the 2015MY, the 2016 WRX STI receives EyeSight safety technology and a $200 price bump to $34,695 (plus $795 destination charge). Where do these updates put the Series.HyperBlue models?
On top of the BRZ and WRX STI food chain is the answer to that question. Limited to 700 WRX STIs and 500 units of the BRZ, the Series.HyperBlue models go on sale this fall and the highlight is the exclusive Hyper Blue exterior paint job. In addition to this, the interior receives Hyper Blue stitching and a helluva lot of extra equipment over the standard models.
For the 2016 Subaru BRZ Series.HyperBlue, the main goods come in the guise of blue stitching on the seats, head rests, steering wheel, shift lever boot, parking brake handle, center console kneepads, door trim, and carpeted floor mats.
On the WRX STI side of the deal, the Series.HyperBlue treatment is more or less similar to the BRZ’s, with the addition of Keyless Access, Push-Button Start, a PIN Code Access feature, and Welcome Lighting. Pricing will be announced this fall.
