The new generation of Smart models is miles better than the originals, no doubt about it. After testing the previous-gen in 1.0 MHD and Electric Drive formats, we took the 2015 ForTwo and ForFour for a spin.
Underpinned by the third-generation Renault Twingo’s platform, the new kids on the block also use H-Type three-cylinder engines. Our test cars were equipped with the entry-level 1-liter naturally aspirated three-banger coupled to a Renault-sourced 5-speed manual.
The end result wasn’t half bad, yet we couldn’t get around the fact even the ForTwo seems a tad underpowered. Smart announced back in January that the 6-speed Twinamic dual-clutch auto is available for €1,000 over the manual, but it's worth it if you consider how much it’ll enhance the driving experience.
Until the 2015 Smart ForTwo Brabus comes to fruition later this year, the aforementioned mill-transmission combo will have to suffice. If you wait a little longer, early 2016 will bring us the long-awaited cabriolet variant of the ForTwo, a model our photographers spied only recently.
The electrically operated folding roof is, more or less, a similar design to what you can have on models such as the Fiat 500C and Citroen DS3 Cabrio. To put it simply, what you can see in the spy photo gallery below is an evolution of the electric sliding mechanism of the first-generation Smart ForTwo.
Regarding when the all-new 2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio will be officially unveiled, mark your calendars for the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
