We’ve been seeing the 2016 Smart Fortwo Cabrio out and testing for quite some time now, even completely undisguised. Basically, we know how it’s going to look like but we’ve never seen it like this before.
Our carparazzi team just caught up with one of the prototypes hiding in the bushes. Well, technically, we think it simply slid off the road but let us dream, right?
The driver must’ve been overenthusiastic about the car’s capabilities on the road and ended up in the bushes, having a moment to cool down. The car that came to the rescue of the unlucky man (and Smart) was ... a smart Forfour!
As for the technical details of the car, you shouldn’t expect any big changes. You shouldn’t expect any changes as a matter of fact, as the cars will all have the same layout, no matter if the roof folds or not.
There will certainly be two 1-liter mills available under the bonnet, making either 60 or 71 HP while the 0.9-liter unit made by Renault will be good for 91 HP. A five-speed manual gearbox will be on the table as well as a Getrag-sourced 6-speed twin-clutch automatic if you’ll so desire.
This being a convertible and appealing to a possible younger and flashier demographic, you should also expect a couple of new, funky colors to be added to the configurator.
The launch of the new Smart Fortwo Cabrio will take place later this year, at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the worst case scenario.
