Just as the hills are alive with the sound of music, our extensive live coverage of the NAIAS was alive with the sound of V6 mechanical idiosyncrasy and the magnificent rumble of lazy V8 thunder. It was no surprise that FoMoCo would steal the show by showing us with the 2016 Shelby GT350R ‘Stang, 2017 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and the 2017 Ford GT in concept guise, but we have pretty big news for all the hardcore Mustang enthusiasts out there.
We’ve been offered with a tip by a gentleman from the Mustang6G forum and that tip is the ordering guide of both the 2016 Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R Mustang blunderbuss. HP and LB-FT are still a mystery at the moment and it’s redundant to tell you yet again that the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 lump has a flat-plane crank, dual mass flywheel, pulse separated exhaust manifolds, charge motion control valves, so on and so forth.
What I do want to talk about is that the least costly 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang will hold a sticker of $52,995 according to insider sources, and that the GT350R is the real rival for the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. According to M6G member GallopingFord, a couple of equipment groups are available for the slithering snake, dubbed 900A for the GT350 and code 920A for the far more track-focused GT350R.
As standard, the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang can boast with a Torsen diff with 3.73 axle ratio, a six-speed manual tranny, Electronic Line-Lock, launch control, dual exhausts with active valves and quad tips, 19-inch Ebony Black-painted aluminum rims, Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber, manual air con, cruise control, Recaro cloth/Miko suede seats with manual adjustments, power windows, a rearview parking camera, 4.2-inch Ford SYNC touchscreen infotainment and a six-speaker audio system too.
Now I want to talk about the harder 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang. Opt for the R Package and you get the equipment included in the GT350’s Track pack and some more (or less): 19” carbon wheels, carbon ceramic disc brakes at the front, bespoke chassis tuning, aluminum rear bumper beam, that cool chin splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, but also deletes the rear seats, air con, floor mats, tire mobility kit, audio system, AUX jack, USB port and standard 4.2-inch SYNC infotainment system.
There’s also an Electronics pack (67S), adding dual zone climate control, SYNC GEN III with an 8-inch touchscreen, turn signal mirrors and other stuff. Oh, right. Seems like Ford has learned something from Porsche with charging you more money for putting stuff back in the car. Color offerings include six hues: Deep Impact Blue, Competition Orange, Magnetic, Race Red, Oxford White, Triple Yellow Tri-Coat, Shadow Black and a finish dubbed Avalanche Gray. If you want more go-faster appeal, then the GT350 should be kitted with the Track Package (code 60T)
This adds MagneRide suspension, a lightweight metal tower to tower bace, selectable driving modes, engine oil, transmission and diff coolers, as well as heavy-duty springs at the front.
