The genetically identical brother of the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ boxer-engined sports cars just got freshened up a bit. For the 2016 Scion FR-S, you get a few extra kit for a base sticker price of just $25,305.
Excluding the destination, processing and handling fee ($770), the six-speed manual variant of the 2016 Scion FR-S carries the previously mentioned MSRP.
Go for the one loaded with the (not so sporty) six-speed sequential automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management technology and you’re looking at $26,405.
So the pricing is roughly $100 better than the outgoing FR-S’ and, get this, you also receive a new standard audio system and a rearview parking camera.
That’s what we’d call great value for money. Slated to arrive at Stateside dealers this June, two new exterior colors will be available: Ablaze red (pictured) and Oceanic blue.
Even though the exterior has been hardly changed, the 2016 Scion FR-S has a new feel inside thanks to bright silver interior accents on the steering wheel bezel, shift bezel, door grip, and along the sides of the center console.
To boot, the FR-S’ interior is complemented by its standard 7-inch touchscreen-operated audio system.
Unsurprisingly, technical specifications and economy figures remain unchanged over the outgoing model year. Therefore, we’re dealing with a 1,998 cc four-cylinder boxer engine that produces 200 HP and 151 lb-ft. The 6-speed manual 2016 FR-S is EPA-rated 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.
But are these changes enough to put up a proper fight with the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 soft top convertible and its appealing $24,915 MSRP? If you had the money, which would it be between the two?
