This is it, ladies and gents with a soft spot for fast runabouts. Renaultsport had its way with the Twingo and, as we anticipated last week, the GT treatment brings 109 PS (107 HP) and 125 lb-ft (170 Nm).
The output comes courtesy of a 0.9-liter Energy TCe turbocharged three-cylinder engine, the same unit found in the 2016 smart fortwo Brabus. Renaultsport engineers squeezed that get-up-and-go from 898 cc with the aid of a better air intake and a different ECU mapping than that of the 90 PS (89 horsepower) three-banger force-fed engine. It's not a big increase, but it's more than welcome if you ask me.
Surprisingly enough, the sole transmission announced by the French manufacturer is a manual. By comparison, the smart fortwo Brabus is equipped with a Twinamic six-speed dual-clutch transmission. As such, it’s natural to assume that the 2016 Renault Twingo GT will sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in more than 9.5 seconds.
The rear-wheel drive warm hatch draws inspiration from the Twin’Run, a concept car with a 3.5-liter V6 mounted in the middle and 320 PS (316 horsepower) on tap. The most obvious element shared between the two is represented by the design of the 17-inch three-tone alloy wheels. The lateral air intakes, two exhaust pipes, and orange paint finish are other tell-tale signs that this is not your usual Twingo.
Other colors available for the Twingo GT include Lunar Grey, Diamond Black, and Crystal White. Inside, the newest go-faster machine from Renault boasts Renaultsport-badged door sills, an alloy gear lever knob, aluminum pedals, and orange trim. Under the skin, the chassis has been tuned for a more sporty driving experience. Specific ESP calibration and a variable-rate steering system are also on the menu.
Expect to find out more about the Renault Twingo GT during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Prospective customers may want to know that the Twingo GT will go on sale in the United Kingdom this winter.
