Even though we discovered some leaked specs of the new Renault Megane about one month ago, the official numbers that were released today had some surprises in store. According to the tech spreads, the 2016 hatchback will have a wide range of available mills including a 115 horsepower 1.6-liter that's not turbocharged. We think that one is Nissan's latest unit that also went into the Duster.
Since we started with the 1.6L, let's detail it fully. The engine branded SCe 115 is the only one in the range fitted with a 5-speed gearbox and also the only one that doesn't have stop-start or smart engine management. The 115 PS output comes in at 5,500rpm and is accompanied by 156 Nm of torque.
The least powerful gasoline engine is a 1.2L turbo that we'd pick over the 1.6L. It makes 100 PS at lower revs and delivers 175 Nm of torque. Their 0 to 100 km/h performance will be nearly identical at just over 12 seconds, but the smaller engine will be more frugal.
Renault also offers the Megane with a 130 PS version of the same engine. It gets to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds with the optional EDC gearbox.
Has Renault become lazy? No, far from it, as the car is different in many ways to the Clio. For example, torque is up from 240 to 280 Nm, while the EDC gearbox now has seven speeds instead of six. The GT is also the only car that has mechanical steering with hydraulically assisted rack and pinion while all the others have electric power steering.
All Meganes including the GT have semi-rigid axle rear suspension, which is a real bummer. But that's part of how they saved so much weight compared to the previous generation.
All diesel engines come with 6-speed gearboxes, manual or twin-clutch in the case of the dCi 110 (option) and dCi 165 (standard).
Renault hasn't actually built the Megane with a twin-turbo engine, so there are no specs for it. However, we believe it will do 100 km/h in about 9 seconds because the dCi 130 takes exactly 10s.
