As the 2016 Renault Megane prepares to debut at the IAA 2015 in September, the 2016 Renault Laguna will have to settle for October according to recent reports. It goes without saying that the Renault Laguna IV will be a massive overhaul for the French manufacturer’s flagship sedan model, as the peeps from Auto Plus France inform in print format.
The French publication's June issue has an exclusive scoop on the 2016 Renault Laguna and the adjacent renderings are very close to what autoevolution’s spy photographers caught on film on more than one occasion. The name of the game here is “radical,” as you can see from the avant-garde styling of the front fascia. If anything, the Laguna’s rendered face resembles that of the all-new Renault Espace.
An oversized Renault logo will throne over an upper front grille that is flanked by sharp-looking headlights with LED technology. The lower grille is just as sharp, shedding the rounded front bumper of yesteryear for a more Germanic design. LED daytime running lights are fitted right above the circular fog lights surrounded by black-painted bezels. Though unconfirmed, the 2016 Renault Laguna could get active grille technology for better aero at higher speeds.
Based on our set of spy photos and Auto Plus’ rendering of the rear, the Renault Laguna IV sedan will receive an LED-laden set of taillights connected by a strip of red LED lights traversing the trunk door. Due to EU regulation, our hunch is that this horizontal bar of red LEDs will not act as the third brake light. The IV has grown in length and width, but the most important aspect size-wise will be the longer wheelbase.
Even the tablet-like vertical infotainment system is lifted straight from the Espace, yet the air vents flanking the touchscreen display are larger than those of the Espace. On the powertrain front, Auto Plus suggests that turbo petrol engines will be 1.6 TCe units with 160 to 200 PS, while the turbo diesel front is taken by 1.6 dCi units with 130 to 160 PS.
To put the purported motors into perspective, the 2015 Renault Espace comes with a 130 PS single-turbo 1.6 dCi and a 160 PS twin-turbo version of the 1.6-liter oil burner. On the petrol-fed front, the Clio RS-derived 1.6 TCe turbo is the only engine available, packing a meaty 200 PS. Transmissions include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic.
The French automotive magazine claims that October 2015 is the time of debut for the Laguna IV, with pricing expected to start from approximately €28,900 (that's £21,040 at current exchange rates).
