The Panamera (or Typ 970 as Porsche likes to call it) entered production in April 2009. That’s 6 years ago and you know what awaits us next year. Yup, an all-new generation of the Germanic luxury four-door sports sedan and good gracious, our carparazzi returned with a new set of spy photos of the thing.
Testing the powder and wagging its tail in the snow up in freezing cold Sweden, a country to thank for IKEA, H&M, Abba and Absolut Vodka, the almost ready for production prototype Panamera featured in the photo gallery below is moderately masked. A curious detail of this certain vehicle are the mirrors, which appear to be lifted from a 991-gen 911 GT3.

Compared to the outgoing Panamera facelift, the successor has grown some flared wheel arches, while the doors appear to have been enlarged for a simple reason - sporty sedan, alright, but a vehicle in this class also needs some top notch comfort for the rear occupants. Otherwise, the luxury attribute of this four-wheeled Teutonic knight wouldn’t be reasonable to use by Porsche's marketing team at all.

Another interesting change is the greenhouse. It's pretty much uncovered, door lines and all, making it easy to see the C-pillar has been repenned for a less claustrophobic experience when seated in the rear.

It also makes us happy that designers have watered down the hunchback sloping roofline of the current model, making the 2016 Porsche Panamera more enticing to admire from its sporty side profile. The elegant bruiser from Stuttgart is based on what the VW Group calls the MSB platform, a skeleton that is reserved for front-engined rear-wheel drive vehicles.

Due to the new underpinnings, the 2016 Panamera is expected to be lighter (around 200 lbs / 91 kg), whether it’s RWD or AWD you fancy. Speaking of these bits, you may want to know that an all-new twin-turbo V8 (probably a 4-liter) is in the works right now, which will be joined by the typical six-pot mills.

It’s not known if the second-gen Panamera GTS will continue the naturally aspirated symphony, but it would be a shame for it to go force-fed. Other than the four-door sedan, the 2016 Porsche Panamera is expected to spawn an Shooting Brake as previewed by a concept that’s called Sport Turismo and later on there might even be a two-door coupe as a 928 successor, a variant that will compete with the Bentley Continental GT and Mercedes S-Class Coupe.
