2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S (turbo) Laps Nurburgring in 7:34 - Sport Auto Test

If there's one magazine whose Nurburgring times have been trusted over the years, that's Sport Auto. The German editors know the Green Hell like the back of their hand and they're completely transparent when it comes to their timed Nordschleife laps.

Well, the latest adventure of this kind saw tester Christian Gebhardt taking the 991.2 Carrera S to the 'Ring. The man and the machine delivered a 7:34 time, which only comes to prove your "average" Carrera S now delivers supercar-like track performance.

However, before we discuss Nurburgring times delivered by machines with greater names, we have to explain Sport Auto's time sits 4 seconds before Porsche's 7:30 claim. Nevertheless, since Zuffenhausen has always been conservative when it came to such figures, there must be an explanation for this.

Since we mentioned official times, we'll tell you the dream-worthy Carrera GT needs 7:28.71 to go round the Nordschleife. And to bring the comparison into the contemporary Porsche arena, we'll list the GT3 RS PDK's 7:20 time.

Sure, the Rennsport Neunelfer mentioned above is a pre-revamp model, but the fact that a Carrera S got so close is still amazing. Then again, the latter model has now inherited the ZF-sourced four-wheel steering system offered on the Turbo (S) and the GT3 (RS).

Then there's the boost under the hood. You should take this literally - since Porsche turbocharged the Carrera and Carrera S, the German engineers threw in a massive output bump to ensure customers quickly get over the lust for an atmospheric engine's power delivery and soundtrack.

Other moves that saw the Carrera S getting 10 seconds faster on the 'Ring include the beefier rear wheels, whose section has jumped from 295 to 305 mm.

But we've discussed figures long enough and the time has come for the "play" button below to serve its purpose.

P.S. If you happen to be awaiting delivery of a 991.2 Turbo S, this shouldn't bother you, as Porsche lists a Nurburgring time of 7:18. And yes, that makes the new Turbo S quicker than the track-obsessed GT3 RS.
