Porsche has been playing with turbocharged engines for about four decades. It started on the track and then trickled down to the 911 Turbo and the 959 supercar. But the German company is more famous for its naturally aspirated engines. We like the way they sound, and they help deliver precise, predictable handling.
However, Porsche has been forced to get with the program and this year it installed a brand new, twin-turbo, 3.0-liter into several versions of the 911. That means more torque, slightly better fuel economy and superior acceleration. However, when we learned that the Carrera models were getting turbocharged, everybody was worried that it would ruin the exhaust sound.

You see, turbochargers work by spinning an air compressor using exhaust gasses. That muffles the exhaust and turns a clean firing order into an unpleasant drone. But that hasn't happened with the 911. Sure, the new Carrera S sounds different to the old one, but it's still very exciting.

There are other things that Porsche has changed about the 911. For example, the car has rear-wheel-steering, sits lower and comes with new headlights. But all everybody wants to talk about is the engine. That's why we are showing you this exhaust clip, where the camera gets up close and personal with the underbelly of the exhaust.

The new sports exhaust system with mid-mounted tailpipes is an option that shows this 911 feels at home on the race track. Of course 10mm lower springs and a standard Porsche Active Suspension Management system also help with handling.

So has the turbocharged engine made the 911 better or worse? Well, it depends. In a straight line, it's noticeably faster, as the Carrera S with the Chrono pack takes just 3.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h. However, there's a little bit of lag at low revs.

Editor's note: Notice the Tesla Model S in the video? Somebody needs to film a drag race between the Carrera 4S and the 70D Base Model base model. Just saying...
