Now that the Targa GTS and the GT3 RS have rounded up the list of 911 flavors, Porsche engineers are working overtime to bring us the facelift for the Neunelfer line-up.
Zuffenhausen has almost completed the development for the 911's mid-cycle refresh, which should come to the world this fall. Returning to that German work they are doing, while the world is still amazed at the trackday material Porsche released in Geneva earler this month, its minions are out on the Autobahn, testing the 911 Cabriolet facelift prototype, as shown in the footage below.

What meets the eye

The body treatment set to be brought by the revamp is aimed more at increasing aerodynamic and thermal efficiency than anything else. Up front, a new apron will be accompanied by restyled headligts showing fresh graphics while keeping the same overall shape.

As for the roof of the Cabriolet, Porsche has already done extensive work to come up with the Panel Bow top that, among others, follows the lines of the Coupe's fixed roof closely. This means you shouldn't expect any major changes above your head.

At the rear, the 911 facelift will make use of redesigned air vents, while also offering us a new take on those sleek light clusters.

Boost pressure

More importantly, the new air inlets and outlets will serve a new generation of turbocharged engines. As many of you know, the 911 will receive forced induction units outside the Turbo badge - new turbo flat fours are being developed for future use in the Cayman and Boxster, while the 911 refresh is set to bring turbo flat six power.

At the other end of the environmental concern scale, we find a big... question, one that regards the existence of a new GT2. At the moment, it's not clear whether Porsche will let the GT3 RS cater to the needs of the hardcore buyers or will add a GT to the line-up towards the end of the current generation's career.

On the inside

Until we find out whether we'll be getting a Turbo with more power and RWD or not, we can talk about the interior of the facelifted model. The changes will be perhaps more visible than those performed on the exterior of the 911.

Thus, we'll be greeted by a new steering wheel inspired from that of the 918 Spyder we've seen the move on other Porsche models such as the Macan. Just as important is the fact that the PCM touchscreen interface will be upgraded, with previous prototypes showing a larger display.

The moment of the launch for the 911 facelift? The Frankfurt Motor Show in September is a good date to set a reminder for.
