2016 Peugeot 2008 Facelift Joins Opel Mokka X for Geneva Crossover Shootout

A decade ago, we didn't even know what a subcompact crossover was. But the Nissan Juke and the MINI Countryman chipped away at our icy hearts until we accepted these quirky little cars. To the victors go the spoils at the Geneva Motor Show, as two of the most popular models on the European market have received facelifts at the same time.

After a very successful run that proved you don't need AWD to be a crossover, the Peugeot 2008 has a new face for 2016. It's the same set of features we saw on the 508 facelift, meaning it gets sharper grille headlights with a bit of tint and a few other defining traits.

The 2008 is a very successful model. Sales jumped 10% last year, and production now takes place in France, Brazil and China. Over half a million have been built since 2013.

To further set models apart and offer customers more design choices, the 2008 now has more SUV-alike body cladding, standard on Allure level and above. The sports GT Line trim has been added as well, giving the tiny crossover a look that's similar to the 208 GTi, minus the engine, of course.

In order to help the car to cope better with snow or mud, Peugeot installed something called Grip Control. Using the brakes to stop the wheels from spinning, it mimics how a mechanical differential might cope with different conditions, separated into Standard, Snow, Mud and Sand settings.

The engines aren't spectacular, consisting of three- and four-cylinder units. The most powerful is a little turbo making 130 PS, but the diesel-fueled BlueHDi 120 1.6-liter is almost as fast and much cleaner, thanks to DPF technology. It's worth noting that the 2008 is one of the smallest and also lightest models in this segment, tipping the scales at just 1,045 kilos (2,304 pounds).

Like the color? It's called Ultimate Red and is shared with the 308 GTI. We think it works perfectly with the added chrome bits and the new 17-inch alloy wheels. Something else we like is an infotainment upgrade which brings Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink technology for syncing smartphones.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
