For most Europeans, the Opel Antara is like a distant memory from a time long passed. In fact the current model dates back to 2006, the same year when Dick Cheney shot his hunting partner and Twitter was founded.
To make up for lost time, Opel is currently planning an all-new generation of the Antara and in typical fashion its development has a lot to do with sister brand Buick. At the 2014 Chengdu Auto Show, Buick just launched a new SUV called the Envision, expected to rival the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class. The Buick model is based on the same new platform that will also underpin an all-new Opel Antara, which we expect to come out in late 2015 and begin selling the following year.

Just to give you an idea of the size of this new Buick model, it's 4,667 millimeters long, 1,804 mm wide and 1,659 mm high. Its wheelbase stretches 2,750 mm. However, it's worth noting that most China-only models have slightly longer wheelbases than their overseas equivalents.

Over the past few years, Buicks and Opels have shared much more than just platforms, being almost identical in terms of design as well. The small Encore crossover from Buick is the same as the German-built Mokka, while the Verano and Regal also have European sedan sisters.

That's why we think this rendering, based on the Envision, will give you a good idea of what the Antara will look like. Changes made by graphic manipulator Remco M include a new grille, wheels and headlights, all borrowed from the Opel Insignia Country Tourer, a new wagon-based crossover.

China's new Buick SUV is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged engine rated at 260 PS. Linked to an automatic gearbox and AWD system with two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches, the Envision is supposed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds. Of corse, European models in this segment usually get the bulk of their sales from diesel engines. Opel already has the right unit for this job in the form of a bi-turbo 2-liter CDTI with 195 PS.

Expect a barrage of safety features to be offered in the tech department, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Keeping Assist, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, Collision Mitigation Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Hill-Start Assist.
