Game changer. That’s what the 2016 Nissan Titan full-size pickup truck is. Though what you can see in our live photo gallery below looks like an entry-level model, this is actually the Titan XD model, a variant slotted in-between the light-duty (1500) and heavy-duty (2500) full-size truck segments.
The 2016 Titan XD showcased at the Detroit Auto Show is the top-of-the-range model, the only that will be available with the 5.0-liter Cummins turbo diesel V8. Speaking of which, the sequential twin-turbo oil burner is rated 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft (752 Nm) of torque, smashing the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to smithereens in terms of pure grunt.
Expectedly, such oomph also comes with a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. When you equip this bad boy properly, the 2016 Nissan Titan XD is built upon a frame and chassis unique to the XD and it’s able to tow 12,000 pounds (5,443 kg), but also boasts with a payload capacity of 2,000 lbs (907 kilograms).
Both the standard 2016 Titan and XD will be offered with a new, range-topping trim level dubbed Platinum Reserve, while the Pro-4X model is set to come exclusively with four-wheel drive. If the 5-liter Cummins turbo diesel isn’t to your liking, Nissan also offers a V6 and a V8. Still, if diesel fuel floats your boat more, Nissan’s Fred Diaz declared that “since the majority of full-size pickup owners drive more than 10,000 miles a year, fuel economy is also critical. Titan XD's Cummins diesel is expected to provide a projected 20 percent better fuel economy than a gasoline-powered V8 while towing full loads.” You know what else beggars belief regarding the new Titan?
Yup, its cabin. The steering column-mounted gear shifter is a little on the thick side, to be honest, but other than that, we really like what we’ve seen and felt live at Detroit. A ritzy yet simple, uncluttered center stack, two jumbo-sized cup holders, nice and soft seats wrapped in leather, as well as sleek and angular air vents. What Nissan USA showed us with at NAIAS is the 6.5-foot bed Crew Cab variant of the truck, but we learned that the configurations list will also add Single Cab and King Cab variants.
