Hardly a week has passed since Mitsubishi published a release about its new infotainment system with a rather neat Easter Egg included. According to the Japanese manufacturer, “the 2016 Pajero SUV” is due to debut in Europe this summer. After multiple spy shots of the all-new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport/Nativa/Challenger, the mid-size SUV’s design leaks in the format of patent images.
I wish the long list of names in the previous paragraph was a joke, but Mitsubishi uses all those monikers for marketing the smaller brother of the full-size Pajero. As the current-generation Pajero Sport is enjoying its 7th year of production, the Japanese manufacturer prepares to take the wraps off the third-generation of the model. It looks rough & rugged in the patent pics from Gizmag and our batch of spy photos, doesn’t it?
Somehow, the front fascia styling appears to be heavily inspired by that of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander facelift, while the taillights have a wee bit of 2016 Volvo XC90 to them. From the side profile, we can see the resemblance between the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport’s front doors, side mirrors and bonnet design to the ones that debuted on the 2015 Mitsubishi L200 compact pickup truck (also known as the Triton).
The outgoing Pajero Sport shares its underpinnings with the former-gen L200/Triton pickup, including the ladder frame chassis, live rear axle, engine and transmission options. Peel off the GC-PHEV Concept-inspired body shell and the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport shows off a rugged four-wheel drive layout animated by a choice of four engines: one petrol and three turbo diesel motors.
Mated to a five-speed and six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic, these powerplants are potent in their own rights. The 2.4-liter gasoline-fed lump develops an entry-level 128 PS/194 Nm (143 lb-ft) , while the 2.4L turbo diesel makes do with 181 PS/430 Nm (317 lb-ft).
The remaining two engines displace 2.5 liters and are fed with diesel, developing 128 PS/240 Nm (177 lb-ft) and 178 PS/400 Nm (295 lb-ft), respectively. A plug-in hybrid variant of the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is expected to arrive to EU dealers sometime next year.
