Mitsubishi are back on the teasing game but this time we get to see more of the upcoming 2016 Outlander, after the carmaker’s last teaser was all about an obscure image showing one of the SUV headlights and the front grille.
The 2016 Outlander will make its world premiere at the 2015 New York Auto Show and according to Japanese officials, the new SUVwill be the first Mitsubishi vehicle to debut the brand’s new design language”. We already caught a glimpse of that due to some fine spying work but we still want to see the whole package.

Mitsubishi is also describing the 2016 Outlander as “a refined crossover utility vehicle that features over 100 engineering and design improvements” but as usual, we’ll have to test it to believe it. However, Mitsubishi will drop sedans for the foreseeable future which means their SUV range will benefit from more attention, a thing that will no doubt have a positive impact on the overall quality of the cars. So we hope.

Rumors have it that under the hood, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander will receive a 2.4-liter MIVEC unit as well as the more powerful 3.0-liter MIVEC V6 mill, but that’s only for the United States. Europeans will have to settle for the loyal 2.2-liter Di-D turbodiesel and the softer 2.0-liter MIVEC alternative.

There’s also a PHEV version in the making, which could receive a powertrain trio made of a 121 HP, 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) 2.0-liter internal combustion engine sharing duties with two electric motors that send a cumulated amount of 164 HP and 332 Nm (245 lb-ft) of torque to the front and real axles.
