2016 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible Spotted Testing in the Cold

At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, MINI unveiled its latest John Cooper Works model, the 3-door hardtop. The event was spiced up with fumes from an original Mini Cooper S that used to race in the Monte Carlo Rally. It was all too good to be true.

Due to this unveiling, we now know how the front fascia of the new JCW models will look like and today our spy photographers sent in some photos of the upcoming convertible model testing near the Arctic Circle.

The driver of this car must be really dedicated to his work as the textile retracting roof of this car can’t offer much protection against the biting cold of the Scandinavian peninsula. You can even notice icicles hanging on the front bumper telling us just how low the temperatures are around those parts of the world.

The convertible MINI will remain true to the recipe used on its predecessors. The textile roof will be kept on and the rest of the changes to the body will be minimal.

Since the room in the boot is already limited on the hardtop version you can only imagine how much will be left on this version, right? Maybe you’ll have room for your lady’s purse. Maybe!

As for the John Cooper Works model, the differences compared to the Cooper S version include a more powerful 2-liter 4-cylinder mill under the bonnet (231 HP / 320 Nm / 236 lb-ft), a revised suspension, new seats, new brakes and a more aggressive front end with more intakes, just as you can see in the spy photos.

Performance could also take a hit, to be honest. That's because usually, Convertibles are heavier than their 'conventional' counterparts due to the extra strenghtening needed to keep things in check without a roof. That being said, we expect this JCW to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 6.3 seconds.

Don’t expect to see this model too soon though. We’ll first have to witness the unveiling of the standard convertible and only after that we’ll get to see the hardcore alternative at work.
