The test prototype for the next-generation W213 E-Class saloon is starting the process of stripping its camouflage, an ominous sign that suggests the debut will happen within a year.
Mercedes and Porsche car spotter Walko from Stuttgart recently took this video of the W213 E-Class, and we can see quite a few new details. For example, the camouflage over the grille has been reduced, so we can see twin wings are used to hold the star emblem. This, we think, is a sign of the Avantgarde line.

The mirrors are also redesigned. As you may have noticed, nearly all Mercedes models from the A- to the G-Class have similar mirror design, square and chunky. They're changing that with a sleek new design with silver caps.

Less than a month ago (May 7th), another 2016 E-Class prototype was filmed by the same person and uploaded to his other Youtube channel. You can check that car out as well. It has simpler headlights and a multi-bar grille, which we think will be used on the E-Class Exclusive line.

The new E-Class is going to be built on the same platform as the W205 C-Class. The wheelbase will be extended to increase interior space. Both petrol and diesel models will be receiving new engine generations. Already, we've seen that the 4-liter twin-turbo they used for the AMG GT can replace the aging 4.7-liter of the E500/550.

Rumor has it that Mercedes are developing a new twin-turbo 2.9-liter inline-6 engine. Even 3-cylinder engines can be adapted for the MRA platform! By the sound of things, the fight between the new E-Class and 5 Series will be hotly contested.
